Conventional doors

The now ubiquitous "Tacked-on-iPad" Mercedes is putting on all their cars...which is inexcusable since AMG developed this independently, whereas they have to have it in the converted Mercedes cars.

Supposed to be more 911 (around $100k) in pricing and will share the 4.0 Twin-Turbo V8 the new C63 is getting.

Quick question. I see that you go and test drive cars quite often. When you go to the dealerships, what car do you bring? I'd think if you brought the Mercedes, the dealership would treat you with the utmost respect, and therefore you'd never have a bad dealership experience.

The dealers that know me don't care what I show up in. The guy that is selling me the i8 is in the middle of a Mk.4 Supra build and nerded out a bit when I showed up the in the HachiRoku. I still deal with a couple of salesman that I've known since the time when my only car was a 8 year old E46 M3 and they have treated me great since the word go, which is why I stick with them. It does get surreal when you pull up and they ask if you want to test drive the $96k 2014 Range Rover Sport in the showroom. Then he pulls it out, tosses you the keys, and says "just be back before closing."

I went to a Ford dealer earlier that day that I had never been to, purposefully came in from the back and parked near the service department. The Focus ST I wanted to drive was in the window and they also pulled it out without hesitation as well. The only difference was that the salesman came with me on the test drive.

Then there was the Audi Dealership in Hilton Head, SC where I was on vacation. I took a friend's Honda Pilot on a day when it was too cloudy for the beach and went car browsing. Went to the Audi dealership, they had a R8 V10. I pulled up. Went in, looked around, 10-15 minutes passed, no one came to ask if I was being helped (but there were plenty of salesman sitting at their desks), and I left. Came back with the SLS, greeted immediately, told the guy that came out that I had been there earlier without any help and I would never set foot through their door again...and I haven't.

A lot of people think that showing up in the SLS (or having them know what kind of car guy I am) means they hold firmer on price because they think I can afford it, but I've found they are typically more willing to deal because they know that I'm not desperate and can truly walk away from a deal. I've had friends that want to go car shopping and ask me because I'm "the biggest car guy" they know and I take them in the SLS. It's HILARIOUS. We'll go back to deal and I'm the "come on let's go" guy that pulls you away when they don't meet your terms. We've literally had them calling before we got down the street agreeing to the deal.

But you hit on something important, I won't deal with a dealership that raises their nose to a potential customer. It much more satisfying to find a dealer that treats you great no matter what you drive up in, then to go back and see the surprise on their face when they find out where you're coming from. Similar to girls. I want a girl to like me before finding out what's in the garage. I like my girls and my dealerships honest.

If it's not an SL class, it's not an SLS replacement.

I'm not convinced. Might be a 911 fighter, but unless they put an SL badge on it, it's no SLS replacement.

Hence the word "replacement" in quotation marks. It's only a replacement in that its a ground up AMG design like the SLS, not based on a regular Mercedes production car. The name "AMG GT" is going around as it's designation.

I'm not really sure AMG should make cars..I mean, that's a different issue altogether, but I don't think it's really original..I mean, when I think of AMG, I think of a batshit Mercedes, not something original.

I do feel the same way about Shelby, and other "factory" tuners, that have built their name around specific brands or models. Just me though...

Does this screen in the middle of the dash strike anyone else as out of place? I think it's more the blue and yellow contrasting with the black and red on the speedo/tach but it really doesn't look good to me.

In my very strong opinion, the future SL class should follow the design of the SLS in the future. It is in fact, their model line with the most advanced tech they have to offer. I was talking to a Mercedes employee about this earlier today. He had nothing to say regarding the new ones, but didn't disagree.

The yellow text is intended to stand out: that's an alert message (reminding the driver not to forget his key, in this case).

Without the flash (i.e. in person) it blends in a bit better into the instrument cluster as seen in other lower-end Mercedes models, but not as well as the circular display on midrange models. It ought to have a full-LCD cluster at this price point, though.

I don't fully understand your statement. If I can remember correctly, the SLS did not offer all of the latest technology that the S-Class of its time had to offer. It was the halo sports car, while the S-Class is the luxury halo.

It should follow in looks. The SL and S class are for two completely different markets. That said, the Mercedes employee I was talking to said that the SL class uses the most advanced tech that they have to offer. The SLS however, I don't think was really an SL Class, but it has some damn good looks the SL could use.

The SLS does make a damn good racecar though. That race this past weekend was really close for them.

I've been inside an S550, it's got the full LCD dash cluster and it looks far better than this does. It also costs less than this car. I'm really not sure why it's not full LCD, then again Mercedes does a lot of things I don't get.
